Little Hats, Big Hearts: Crochet for a Cause

Do you knit or crochet? In celebration of American Heart Month, the American Heart Association is asking for volunteers for their Little Hats, Big Hearts program.

Help spread awareness heart disease, the number one killer of Americans, and congenital heart defects, which are the most common type of birth defects in the United States.

Volunteers are needed to knit or crochet hats in preemie and newborn sizes in yarn that meets the following criteria:

  • red in color
  • cotton or acrylic
  • medium to heavy weight
  • machine washable and dryable
  • simple pattern (no bows, buttons, etc. as they may fall off and be a choking hazard)

Babies born at participating hospitals in the month of February (American Heart Month) will be given a red hat made by caring crafters like yourself!

They provide basic patterns for both knitted and crocheted hats; you can also use my Basic Beanie pattern. If you don’t knit or crochet, that’s okay! Help out by sending a yarn donation.

If you are in Washington State, like myself, hats and yarn should be sent to the following address no later than January 15, 2016:

Elly Henderson
American Heart Association
710 2nd Ave Suite 900
Seattle, WA 98104

Several states are participating and may have different deadlines. If your state isn’t participating, you can always send hats or yarn to any other participating office in a nearby state. You can also contact your local office about starting up this program near you.

So have a heart–help out and spread awareness. I know I will!
