How to Join Your HP CAL Squares

Happy Wednesday, crafters!

With the HP CAL coming to an end, I thought I would take the opportunity to show you how I am joining each of my HP CAL squares to make the larger blanket.

If you are unfamiliar with the technique of the single crochet join, you can check out this awesome video.

One very important piece of advice: to make joining your squares easier, make sure you have at least one round of single crochet stitches around each square.

I do 2 stitches per block on the graph (50 per side for the smaller squares and 100 per side for the center square) and none in the corners–but if you find your corners are puckering, you can do a couple in the corners.

The actual joining is really fast and easy–it’s my favorite method of joining squares!

When you’re comfortable with the technique, you can move on to the joining of your HP CAL squares. Here’s the order in which I am joining them (new joins are in blue, previously-made joins are in white):

Step 1: Make small joins between the squares that form the left- and right-hand sides of the blanket. (Example: Join Platform 9 3/4 to Harry, then Harry to the Sorting Hat, then the Sorting Hat to the Deathly Hallows, etc.) You will end up with two columns of squares.

Step 2:Make small joins between the Golden Snitch and the Dark Mark, and between Hermione and Hedwig. Now you will have two columns, two short rows, and the center square.

2

Step 3: Make medium joins between your two short top/bottom rows (Snitch/Dark Mark, Hermione/Hedwig) and the center Hogwarts Crest square. You should end up with two columns and one large center column that is twice the width of the other columns.

Step 4: Make long joins between the left- and right-hand columns and the larger center column. This should complete all of your joins for the HP blanket!

4

Step 5: To finish, work at least one row of sc in your joining color around the entire blanket. At this point, you can work more detailed borders around your blanket if you wish!

I hope that helps everyone get a visual on how the joining works! You could really do it in any order you want, but this seemed the most efficient to me. It really does work up quick!

Instead of weaving in all of these ends, I will be knotting them nice and securely on the backside of the blanket and then lining the back with some kind of fabric (yet to be determined). When I have figured out exactly what I am going to do, I will post a tutorial on how to line your blanket if you would like to do the same! I hope to be at that point this weekend, but we’ll see how far I progress this week with my Weasley Jumper square.

Hedwig is our next square, and she will be available on Friday. In the meantime, happy crafting!

  1. Did you ever back your blanket with fabric? I love doing this because I hate weaving in the ends…..i prefer knotting……but have not perfected my method……looking for advice 🙂
