I’ll admit that we’ve had a very pleasant summer so far here in eastern Washington state. It’s been pretty mild with only a few very hot days sprinkled here and there. While we’ve been pretty lucky so far, I’m afraid our pleasant summer days of 70+ degrees are coming to an end: we’re entering the full heat of summer.
Honestly, I don’t do well with heat…I manage much better in the winter time! But after week of temps in the mid-eighties–and climbing into the nineties–everything around here is starting to get h-o-t. Even my house is averaging about 78 degrees (we don’t have air conditioning), and it’s starting to make crocheting blankets and other large projects less and less enjoyable.
In an attempt to beat the heat last summer, I ventured into both garments and cotton yarn with my Nerdy Cardi pattern: a lightweight, sleeveless cardigan that’s great for warmer days when you still want to wear your crochet.
As you can see from the photos above, I actually made two different Nerdi Cardis: one made with Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton yarn with the Deathly Hallows symbol (the pink one on the right) and one made with Stylecraft Special DK yarn in Hufflepuff colors with the Hufflepuff badger on the back (the one on the left).
I wear the pink one all of the time because I love the way the cotton yarn looks, feels, and breathes. I still wear the Hufflepuff one though, because #PuffPride!
This summer, I’ve decided to make another nerdy/geeky summertime cardigan using more of the Lion Bran d24/7 cotton yarn. Seriously guys, this yarn is perfect for summer garments!
So for this summer, I’m making this:
It doesn’t look like much, but it’s not finished yet! (Please ignore that horribly back-lit photo of me trying it on!)
It still needs some sleeve work and some trim around the bottom and inside edges, but it’s coming along well. Best of all, it’s worked in the super easy-to-learn rope stitch (also called the V-stitch), which works up fast and is absolutely lovely!
The color is called Ecru, and it’s so light and pretty…and it goes with everything!
The warmer it gets, the less I’m enjoying actually working on this thing (mostly because I have to drape it over my legs to work on the trim), but I can’t wait for it to be finished. It may not look like it now, but I promise there will be a surprise nerdy component to it!
Here’s an up-close look at this beautiful stitch:
Isn’t that just gorgeous?
This summer cardigan will be a free pattern right here on the blog. It’s one-size-fits-many, but I’ll include instructions on how to size it to fit anybody you wish!
If you have any suggestions for this cardigan’s name, I’d love to hear them! Leave a comment and tell me what you think I should call this beauty. 🙂
