Mystery Ami CAL – March

Mystery Ami CAL March

It’s the beginning of March, which is–for many places in the world–the bringer of springtime! However, it’s currently snowing as I type this, so…

I’m so excited for this month, for three very important reasons. First, I’m so done with all of this snow and cold weather, so I’m very hopeful that it will start to warm up soon here in eastern Washington. Second, I’m going on vacation later this month! And third, we’re making a new doll this month, who happens to be one of my favorite characters of all time.

Usually, these posts fall on the first four Tuesday mornings of the month. However, since I am going on vacation in a few weeks, I’m going to have to move a few things around. Instead of doing 4 weeks of crochet mystery goodness, we’ll be doing 3. So here’s a schedule breakdown of the planned releases for each “week” of the March doll pattern:

  • Week 1 – Tuesday, March 6th
  • Week 2 – Tuesday, March 13th
  • Week 3 – Tuesday, March 27th

As each week is posted, it will be available in this same post–just scroll down a little ways to find the next week’s portion of the pattern!

Below you will find the materials list for the March doll AND a stitch guide for this month’s doll. Are you ready to get started? I know I am!

March Materials List

Skill Level: Easy+

Difficulty -EasyPlus

Materials Needed:

Note: This will be a small-ish doll, just a little larger than my other mini amigurumi patterns. It will be nerdy in nature. Those are the only hints you get! As a result, you will only need a small amount of yarn to make this doll, but you may need to purchase more in order to have all of the colors required. You can use any worsted-weight yarn you choose in colors similar to those pictured below.

  • img_4317
    Pictured above: the yarn colors that I’m using to make the March doll.

    Size D/3.25mm hook

  • 2 plastic safety eyes, 6mm
  • 1 skein (there will be leftovers!) of Vanna’s Choice yarn in the following color(s): white, beige, and chocolate
  • 1 skein (there will be leftovers!) of Red Heart yarn (there will be leftovers!) in the following color(s): blue
  • Polyester fiberfill stuffing (available at most craft stores)
  • #10 crochet thread in black
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

Stitch Guide

You will need to know a few different types of stitches in order to make this doll. Below is a guide to help you with the abbreviations of the terms and stitches used in this doll pattern (written in US terms).

Stitch Abbreviations:

sl st = slip stitch

ch = chain

sc = sc

hdc = half-double crochet

dc = double crochet

trc = treble crochet/triple crochet

inc = increase

dec = decrease

sc3tog = single crochet 3 stitches from the previous row together–it’s basically a single crochet decrease over 3 stitches instead of 2. Need a tutorial? Check out this one from Shiny Happy World!

between the eyes.

Carefully stuff the head, but do not overstuff!

Carefully stuff the body, but do not overstuff!

Rnd 20) In BOTH LOOPS, *sc dec* – repeat 5 times, then sc. Join and fasten off. (6)

Use the tail end of the yarn and a yarn needle to sew closed the opening at the base of the body. Weave in ends.

With BLUE, insert your hook into the FRONT LOOP of the first st of rnd 19, ch 1. Then begin rnd 21.

Rnd 21) *sc inc, sl st* – repeat 8 times. Sl st in the last st of the rnd. Fasten off and weave in ends. (25)

Week 2 Pattern: Arms & Hair

Arms (Make 2)

Rnd 1) In BEIGE, make a Magic Circle. Ch 1 and work 5 sc in the center of the Magic Circle. Join to the beginning sc of the round and ch 1. (5)

Rnd 2) 5 sc. Change to WHITE. Join and ch 1. (5)

Rnd 3) In WHITE, 5 sc. Join and ch 1. (5)

Rnd 4) 5 sc. Join and ch 1. (5)

Rnd 5) 5 sc. Join and fasten off , leaving a long tail for sewing. (5)

Weave in all ends of your doll’s arms by pulling them through the length of the arm, then trim. Do this for all of the tail ends for the arms EXCEPT for the long tails that you left for sewing.

Using the long tail that’s left, sew the opening at the top (“shoulder”) of the doll’s arm shut so that it is basically sewn flat across. Then sewn the arms to round 11 of the doll’s body so that the now flat part of the doll’s arm lays nice and flat against the doll’s body. Repeat for the second arm.

Hair – Main Piece

Rnd 1) In CHOCOLATE, make a Magic Circle. Ch 1 and work 7 sc in the center of the Magic Circle. Join to the beginning sc of the round and ch 1. (7)

Rnd 2) *sc inc* x 7. Join with a sl st and ch 1. (14)

Rnd 3) *sc inc, sc* x 7. Join with a sl st and ch 1. (21)

Rnds 4‐6) 21 sc. Join and ch 1. (21)

In round 7, we’re going to make the doll’s bangs! These will look like two large “lumps” in the front–we’re going to fold them back and stitch them on later, so don’t worry if your hair piece looks a little big when you try it on your doll.

Rnd 7) sc, hdc, 4 dc, trc inc, dc, hdc inc, sc, sl st, sc, hdc inc, dc, trc inc, 4 dc, hdc, sc. Fasten off. (25)

Hair – Ponytail Piece

Row 1) With CHOCOLATE, insert your hook into the 23rd st of rnd 7 of the main hair piece. Ch 1. 3 sc. Turn and ch 1. (3)

Row 2) 3 sctog. Turn and ch 1. (1)

Row 3) 3 sc in same st. Turn and ch 1. (3)

Row 4) sc inc, sc, sc inc. Turn and ch 1. (5)

Row 5) sc dec, sc, sc dec. Turn and ch 1. (3)

Row 6) 3 sc. Turn and ch 1. (3)

Row 7) sc3tog. Fasten off, leaving a tail long enough to weave in. (1)

Sew the hair piece to the doll’s head. Remember those “lumps” we talked about for round 7 of the main hair piece? Make sure they are centered across the doll’s face. Fold the “lumps” back up onto the hair piece and stitch them into place. It helps to do this part after the main hair piece has been stitched on.

If desired, wrap a strand of BLUE yarn around the ponytail and knot it in the back (see photo). Weave in all ends.

Week 3 Pattern: Apron & Finishing

Apron

Rnd 1) In WHITE, ch 9. Starting in the 2nd chain space from the hook, work 8 sc. Turn and ch 1. (8)

Rnd 2) 8 sc. Turn and ch 1. (8)

Rnd 3) sc dec, 3 sc, sc dec. Turn and ch 1. (8)

Rnd 4) 5 sc. Do not fasten off–continue from this point to work the apron band.

To make the apron band, chain 14. Join to the first st of row 4 (the other side of the apron top) and fasten off, leaving a tail long enough for sewing.

Finishing Details

Sew the apron onto the doll’s body using a yarn needle and the tail ends of the yarn from the apron.

Use a strand of CHOCOLATE yarn and a yarn needle to embroider the doll’s eyebrows.

Use a strand of BLACK thread and a needle to embroider the doll’s eyelashes.

Weave in any remaining ends and trim any excess yarn.

Week 1 of the April doll will be posted next Tuesday, April 3rd by 10am PST.

And the March doll is…

…it’s Belle in her provincial blue dress! If you guessed correctly over the last few weeks, congratulations!

  1. I’m going to say it’s that dragon whisperer chick from Game of Thrones. Daeneris Targarden or however you spell it.

  2. Definitely Belle now!! 🙂 In the village, reading the books.
    But wonder now… Alex already has a Belle pattern… but that’s for Belle when she’s dancing with The Beast (in the yellow dress)… Ummmm…
