Solar System CAL Planets

Let’s be real: it’s not a Solar System CAL without planets, right?

The Solar System Blanket has a total of nine planet appliques: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto (it is a planet, I say!).

Some of the planet patters will be released starting with week 5 of the CAL, and others will be released periodically after that. Scroll down to the bottom of this post to find the available planet patterns.

Note: The pattern for Earth will be coming soon! It’s a little more complicated, so I am going to make a video tutorial for that one. That will be posted with the pattern within the next couple of weeks.

As my baby brother likes to say (all at once in a really rushed voice):3…2…1…BLAST OFF!

The Planet Patterns

Note: If you are making your blanket double sided, make two of each planet! You’ll then sew one planet to the blanket and then sew the second copy onto the back side of the blanket where the first one is attached (basically sandwiching the base blanket between the two copies of your planet).

Mercury – In “CLARET” Color

Round 1) In CLARET, make a Magic Circle. Ch 1, then work 6 sc in the circle. (6 sts)

Round 2) *sc inc* x 6. Fasten off, leaving a tail long enough to sew the planet to the blanket. (12 sts)

Venus – In “VINTAGE PEACH” Color

Round 1) In VINTAGE PEACH, make a Magic Circle. Ch 1, then work 6 sc in the circle. (6 sts)

Earth – In “ROYAL” and “GREEN” Colors

To make your planet Earth applique, you’re going to need to work from a chart. For my little blue dot, I used single crochet stitches and carried my unused colors across the back side of my applique.

Click here to download the PDF planet Earth chart with instructions.

Please note that the instructions on this PDF chart are quite minimal; this is because I’m much more of a visual person, so I found it easier to explain what I was doing as I was doing it. To that end, you can find detailed instructions on how to make your Earth by watching the video tutorial below. It’s a little long, but I tried to be thorough!

Jupiter – In “CREAM”, “GOLD”, “MOCHA” and “CLARET” Colors

To finish, use GOLD and sc all the way around the edge of the planet. Fasten off, leaving a tail long enough to sew the planet to the blanket.

The “Red Spot”

In CLARET, ch 8. Starting in the 2nd chain space from the hook, work 2 sc, hdc, dc, hdc, 2 sc.

You should have now reached the end of the chain. Ch 1, then work in the other side of the chain: 2 sc, hdc, dc, hdc, 2 sc. Join to the beginning sc with a sl st and fasten off, leaving a tail long enough to sew the spot to the planet.

Saturn – In “GOLD” and “MOCHA” Colors

NOTE: Saturn is made in the round as many of the other planets, but the rings are made separately and then sewn on last.

Saturn

Round 1) In GOLD, make a Magic Circle. Ch 1, then work 6 sc in the circle. (6 sts)

Finishing

img_4446Place your planets onto your blanket in whichever order you choose! I designed this blanket so that they could be placed fairly close together, but they still won’t line up all in a row (the orbits are just too small and the planets are just too large).

You can use a website like this one to determine the location of the planets on any given date, which is kind of cool! Or you can simply arrange them however you like best, as I did.

After we’ve made all of the planets and the bonus appliques, we’ll be backing this beautiful blanket. Excited yet? With the addition of the planets, it’s really starting to come together!

Week 11 (the science-themed appliques) is available here.

  2. Someone’s going to sleep very well tonight knowing his mom will make earth on his blanket. So looking forward to start. Thanks for the pattern so far. It’s been an absolute pleasure to work on.

  3. This has been a great project! Thank you for letting us join in your trip to the moon! I am wondering though if I have missed a few planets along the way….this week says there is more then what I have made….are we still missing a few?

  4. (Warning, this is all pedantry)

Wait, mercury is smaller than Pluto? and the same color as Mars? And Saturn is the same size as the sun? I think I’m going to do hook size shenanigans to help some of this but I have a sad.

    1. Looking at the layout I feel l less angst about the outer planets, gotta fill at least some of that space… still think mercury is weird though.

  5. Took me a second, but I was confused at first where to put the Sl St in Pluto’s crater. Couldn’t decide if it went into the 1st stitch or magic circle (even though it’s written that they all go in the circle). Just a thought to avoid confusion for other people too 🙂
