Solar System CAL Week 2: Rounds 31-50

Whew!

Week 1 of the Solar System CAL was a total blast! This project has garnered so much excitement from crafters all around the world. So many people have joined in, and I have to say that I absolutely LOVE seeing photos of your Solar System Blankets! To share, remember to use #SolarSystemCAL on all of your social media posts. Keep those pics coming!

Apparently, I’m a super tight crocheter…apologies! I thought I was a kind of (?) tight crocheter, and I thought that the 6 increases per round would work just fine for everyone. But perhaps not! If you’re still fighting your blanket to lay flat, watch video #4 on the Getting Started page for tips!

Week 2 is finally here! This week, we are making rounds 31-50 of the base blanket. It’s nothing too challenging this week, just more of the same. We’re doing the orbits for Earth and Mars, as well as the void space between Mars and the asteroid belt (which will be covered in week 3). Rounds 31-50 took me approximately 5 hours to make. I’ve posted the pattern instructions below.

Also, I’ve decided that I will be backing my blanket with some kind of fabric! This means that I’ll be doing a bonus “week 13” for this CAL, which will include a photo tutorial on how to back your circular blanket. The technique is the same as how I backed the Star Trek lapghan, but I’ll try not to pick a black fabric this time around…

Anyway, I hope you enjoy week 2 of the Solar System CAL! Please keep sharing your photos! And if you’ve discovered tips or stumbled across a trick that’s helped you with your blanket, I encourage you to leave a note in the comments for future makers to read through.

Ready to keep going? You’ve got this!

  1. Thank you! So glad you’ve decided to line your blanket. I was beginning to wonder about hiding all the ends when adding the planet’s. My crochet is good but my sewing only so so. 😁

  2. I am SO anxious to start this, it can’t find the yarn. I’ve looked locally and on Amazon, but can’t find it and am not happy with the delivery time from Amazon. Can you suggest a place I can order the yarn that doesn’t take forever for delivery, or maybe a substitute brand that might have all the colors? Thanks so much!!!

  3. I ordered my wool from either lovecrochet.com or woolwarehouse. Both are really good at delivering quickly. I am based in the UK though

  4. Can we get the total round number, rather than just the number for this week? I know I can figure it out, just makes referencing quicker…

Also if I’m doing my math right there will be weeks where we’re just doing void? That feels like quite the slog of counting…
