Solar System CAL Week 3: Rounds 51-66

Two weeks down, several more to go!

In case you missed it, week 2 of the Solar System CAL is now available. So many people have been tagging me in photos of their Solar System Blankets, and I absolutely love seeing them! Feel free to tag Two Hearts Crochet on whichever social media platform you’re using…and don’t forget to use #SolarSystemCAL! I love seeing your photos, so keep ’em coming!

Week 3 is finally here! This week, we are making rounds 51-66 of the base blanket, as well as the sun’s corona piece! This section of the blanket also includes the bobble stitch asteroid belt round. More instructions on how to do the bobble stitch (and photos!) are included below. Rounds 51-66 took me approximately 5 hours to make. Scroll down a ways to see week 3’s section of the Solar System Blanket pattern!

This week’s part of the blanket pattern is super fun. We’re going to do a bobble stitch round for the asteroid belt, which adds extra texture to this otherwise flat blanket. I’m also including instructions on how to make the sun’s corona applique, because it’ll be easier for you to sew that on now than at the end (trust me on this one).

To that end, a few planet patterns will be released soon as well. The inner part of the Solar System becomes more difficult to reach as you get further into the blanket, so I plan to share the patterns for Mercury, Venus and Mars in the coming weeks (earth is a little more complicated…). More details to come!

Anyway, it’s time for less yapping and more crocheting! Ready to keep going? You’ve got this!

Bobble Stitch Tutorial

Below is a photo tutorial explaining how to do the bobble stitches for the asteroid belt round (round 51). You will not be increasing on this round–the thickness of the bobbles is enough to keep the blanket flat and expanding just enough for this round.

There are lots of different ways to do the bobble stitch and to modify it. Below are the instructions on how I did the bobble stitch for this blanket.

NOTE: You should have joined the last round (round 50) with a slip stitch and have the GRAPHITE color ready to go. You should have also (per the instructions of round 50) made 1 chain stitch in GRAPHITE. Ready? Great!

Step 1) Yarn over. Insert your hook into the first stitch of the round. Yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook).

  • Yarn over again and pull through 2 loops. (2 loops on hook)

At the end of step 1, you should have 2 loops on your hook (see above photo).

Step 2) Yarn over and insert your hook into the same stitch. Yarn over again and pull up a loop. (4 loops on hook).

  • Yarn over again and pull though 2 loops. (3 loops on hook)

At the end of step 2, you should have 3 loops on your hook (see above photo).

Step 3) Yarn over and insert your hook into the same stitch. Yarn over again and pull up a loop. (5 loops on hook).

  • Yarn over again and pull though 2 loops. (4 loops on hook)

At the end of step 3, you should have 4 loops on your hook (see above photo).

Step 4) Yarn over and insert your hook into the same stitch. Yarn over again and pull up a loop. (6 loops on hook).

  • Yarn over again and pull though 2 loops. (5 loops on hook)
img_3798
At the end of step 4, you should have 5 loops on your hook (see above photo).

Step 5) Yarn over and pull through all the loops on your hook. (1 loop/1 finished bobble on hook)

At the end of step 5, you should have 1 loops – or 1 completed bobble – on your hook (see above photo).

And there you go! One bobble stitch. You will not be increasing for the bobble stitch round, so don’t worry. Instead, you’ll be alternating bobble stitch and sc stitches back and forth, over and over again for the entire round: one bobble, one sc.

  1. For the sun corona, I went ahead and crocheted through the back loop so I didn’t have to sew the corona on. Can we just follow these same instructions (except for the sewing part)?

    1. Hi Danielle–YES! You can definitely do this. Just insert your hook into a stitch in your front loop of the last sun round, chain 1, and work the first row of the corona as instructed (just don’t do the chains)! 🙂

  2. My husband said my asteroid belt was too neat and that they should be staggered around in the void space, haha. As cool of an idea as that is, I don’t think he really appreciates how much work that would be!

    Loving this cal so far!

    1. Mine was giving me trouble about including Pluto but not Ceres. I was thinking about hacking something together, but now that I know it’s textured that may not work….

    1. Hi Melissa, at this time I don’t have plans to move this into a pdf pattern. HOWEVER, if you’re a member of the Two Hearts Crochet Family Facebook group, one of our group members there is compiling everything every week and putting into a single document.
